External stressors

They are often related to your environment. For example, urban life and its consequences (noise, crowding, pollution...) are common causes of stress. Some of this environment problems can also be found at work : too much noise or smoking, tensions, uncomfortable working conditions, computer stress... This phenomene is enhanced by the usual work pressure due to strains, conflicts, delays to respect...

Sudden changes can also affect your stress level : emergency situations (road accident, imminent danger) that induce adrenalin generation, major life events such as a divorce, death, moving house or a sudden lay-off from a job. To the contrary, routine or everyday life problems can also be a factor of stress (persistent strain of caring for somebody sick, financial worries, personal health problems).

Finally, an unsatisfying or boring life can induce a lot of stress. Conditions such as prolonged unemployment are a common example, but it's also the case with relationships problems, conflicts in personal life or at work, not interesting or repeating job...

Internal stressors

They are related to your character and psychology : too much anxious worrying about events beyond your control, a tense or hurried approach to life, relationship problems caused by your own behaviour, can often induce stress reaction. This is all related to mental and emotional disposition : somebody who uses to be pessimist, who cultivates negative thinkings and regrets, will be more often subject to stress.

Bad habits

A lot of bad habits may be responsible for stress problems. Bad consommation habits (smoking, alcohol, coffee, drugs use, taking additives, bad diet or indulging in junk food) are often masking the stress but may be harmful over the long term. Other coping mechanisms like lack of sleep, excess in sports, lack of time or too much hurry, can be physical factors of stress; difficulties to balance work and personal life are rather mental factors.
